Kevin Langford

Images taken using a Canon EOS 750D with standard lens set to 55mm white light filter fixed on the mount. Fixed to standard tripod.

One picture taken every 5mins until the sun went behind that house.

The final picture was made up of the sun images merged with a picture of the house taken later. Affinity Photo was used to create the picture.

CMHASD Partial Solar Eclipse Public Outreach Event — A Resounding Success

On 12 August 2026, the Crayford Manor House Astronomical Society Dartford (CMHASD) opened its doors — and its telescopes — to the public for a special outreach event to observe the Partial Solar eclipse.  And what a day it turned out to be!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure="1_3,1_3,1_3" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://crayfordmanorastro.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_3087.jpeg" title_text="IMG_3087" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://crayfordmanorastro.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_3076.jpeg" title_text="IMG_3076" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_image src="https://crayfordmanorastro.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_3078.jpeg" title_text="IMG_3078" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

We estimate that at least 83 visitors joined us during the event, eager to see the Moon take a bite out of the Sun.

The excitement among visitors was genuinely infectious. Children and adults alike were “wowed” and awed by what they saw, while CMHASD members were equally excited to share the experience. There is something rather special about seeing the expression on someone's face when they look through a telescope and suddenly realise that they are seeing the Sun in extraordinary detail — and not merely a bright blob in the sky.

Solar observing — safely, of course!

CMHASD provided multiple solar-safe observing telescopes, including two specialist hydrogen-alpha solar telescopes, one of which belongs to the Society. These gave visitors spectacular views of our nearest star, including features that ordinary white-light observing simply cannot reveal.

We also distributed free safe solar-observing spectacles to visitors. This was particularly appreciated given the national shortage of suitable solar glasses in the run-up to the eclipse.

Our members were particularly pleased to help children experience the eclipse safely. The enthusiasm of our younger visitors was wonderful to see, and several CMHASD members excelled themselves in explaining what was happening in ways that made sense to inquisitive young minds — without requiring anyone to sit an astronomy examination beforehand!

The weather behaved itself!  We were blessed with excellent observing weather, providing first-rate visual conditions throughout the event. The eclipse was clearly visible and the views through the solar telescopes were spectacular.

The only celestial object apparently determined to make its presence felt rather too enthusiastically was the Sun itself, with temperatures becoming distinctly warm!

CMHASD therefore did what any responsible astronomical society should do: alongside telescopes, solar filters and astronomical expertise, we provided shade and natural comforts for visitors when required. After all, there is little point in observing the heavens if the observer has melted before reaching the eyepiece!

Bringing astronomy to our local community.  CMHASD was particularly proud that this was the only officially organised public eclipse event serving the Boroughs of Bexley and Dartford.

The event demonstrated exactly why public outreach is such an important part of the Society's work. We were able to bring astronomy directly to our local community, provide safe access to specialist equipment, answer questions, encourage curiosity and, most importantly, allow people to experience a remarkable astronomical event for themselves.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

Meanwhile, several CMHASD members had travelled all the way to Spain to observe the total solar eclipse, experiencing the extraordinary spectacle of totality. Those of us remaining in Kent had to be content with a partial eclipse, although, judging by the expressions of our visitors, we weren't doing too badly!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

A tremendous team effort.  As Chairperson of CMHASD, I am immensely pleased with the success of the event. Seeing so many members of the public, and particularly children, becoming excited about astronomy and experiencing the eclipse for themselves made all the preparation and hard work thoroughly worthwhile.

I would like to give my sincere thanks to Sonia, Diane, Tina and our Society Secretary, Mike, together with the many other CMHASD members who helped organise, prepare and run the event. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, patience and willingness to help the public throughout the day were exceptional.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

I would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Sutton-at-Hone Parish Council for its support of the event.

The success of the day was a wonderful demonstration of what CMHASD can achieve when its members come together with a shared passion for astronomy and a desire to inspire others.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.27.7" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}"]

If you want to know more about astronomy (day or night), then please do contact CMHASD, and we will do our best to answer your queries, maybe even inspire you to join us.

And perhaps the best measure of our success was not the number of telescopes, solar filters or pairs of eclipse spectacles we handed out, but the number of people who walked away saying, in one form or another:

“Wow!”

For an astronomical society, that's a pretty good day's work.

I would also like to say thank you to those members who shared their photos of the event too.  They really show the spirit of the day.

A team consisting of Steve Floodgate, Tina Bishop, Diane Clarke, Steve Goldson, Jim Burchell, Gary Hunt, John Howarth and Mike Rushton set up from 11.30am, with assembly of three gazebos (one for the chefs and two for members to sit in the shade), the outdoor games and the telescopes for solar observing.

Steve, Jo and Tina set up their respective barbecues and very soon all was ready.

After a fantastic lunch cooked by our 3 brilliant chefs: Steve Floodgate, Jo Southgate and Tina Bishop… it was time for games.

One of the games which was introduced by Steve Goldson, was a Finnish skittle game called ‘Mölkky’ and is pronounced “milkay”. The competition amongst members was fierce, with many finding unique ways of tossing the baton and getting the points!

Croquet was played by several members too and just like Mölkky, competition between players was fierce.

BAA Winchester Astronomy Weekend: Sparsholt (April 10 – 12 2026) Celebrating 60 years of Observational Astronomy.
Below is an account of the weekend written by CMHASD new member Tina Bishop. Thank you Tina.
''As a relative newcomer to the astronomy community, I was a little apprehensive that the Winchester Weekend might be too technical or "academic" for me, but I shouldn’t have worried. It was the perfect introduction as the BAA were celebrating 60 years of observational astronomy, not only that but the weekend also coincided with the completion of the Artimis II mission with Orion’s spectacularly safe splashdown!
While many of the lectures were scientific, they were accessible. It was also very useful going with other members of CMHASD, as they were on hand during and after each lecture and were, as always, happy to clarify anything I wasn’t sure of, including some of the acronyms (thank you Rita, Martin, Diane and Roger).
The whole atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. The food was of a high standard and plentiful! As were the tea and cakes between lectures! The campus bar also did a roaring trade!
Unfortunately, there was limited opportunity for actual observing due to cloudy skies, but some people managed to make observations of a variable star before rain stopped play. Everyone also had the opportunity during the day to observe sunlight using a spectroscopic telescope, which was amazing!
The lectures were interesting and informative. There was a packed varied programme that was well organised - from how amateur astronomers can contribute to exoplanet research, observing variable stars, control of dew and thermal management of telescopes, thermal imaging of the moon, what comets have done for us and much, much more!
The speakers were engaging and exuded enthusiasm in their chosen specialism. I particularly enjoyed the ‘Still Chasing Rainbows: A spectroscopic progress report” (Robin Leadbeater) lecture as the previous week I had attended the CMHASD own Whistlestop Introduction for Beginners to Astronomy course which had covered light and introduced me to spectroscopy!
There was a fantastic historical lecture ‘The 1896 eclipse expedition to Norway (Bill Barton) Detailed records of the meticulous planning of the expedition along with photographs were shared. A fascinating, light-hearted lecture.
Another highlight of the weekend was the keynote speaker for The Alfred Curtis Lecture on Saturday night. JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) as a New Voyager for the Giant Planets (prof Leigh Fletcher) explaining how astronomers are conducting ongoing research extending our knowledge of the Jovian planets.
On Sunday Newbury Astronomical Society presented a powerful insight into the campaign for dark skies, sharing how vitally important it is to keep our already light polluted skies dark!
In the afternoon a number of amateur astronomers shared projects they had been working on.  Dave and Steve from CMHASD presented a particularly fun slot, reflecting the whole tone of the weekend a mix of engaging scientific lectures and friendly people sharing their love and knowledge of astronomy, the whole weekend was incredibly inspiring.
A huge thank you to the BAA organizers for such a seamless and high-quality event!  I would definitely go again!!
Clear skies
Tina''

Christmas Quiz – 2025

CMHASD members David Grist and Steve Floodgate pulled out all the stops to provide a night of head scratching, puzzlement and fun.  Thank you Dave & Steve for all your hard work & effort creating the quiz.  It was a great night and we are all looking forward to the next one!

Chairman Gary Hunt wrote: 'Title: Quizmas, Klingons & Missing Trophies at Crayford Manor House!

On Thursday evening, 11th December 2025, CMHASD Pavilion, once again echoed to the sounds of festive cheer, competitive groaning, and the unmistakable hum of suspicious transporter activity, as the Astronomical Society’s Christmas Quiz warped off in fine style.

The evening was masterfully created and run by Dave Grist and Steve Floodgate, affectionately (and accurately) known as Eric’n’Ern, channelling Morecambe and Wise with added astronomy and fewer dancing routines. Their efforts ensured chaos, laughter, and confusion were course delivered in precisely the right orbital trajectory.

Four teams boldly went where quizzes have gone before:
The Vulcans
The Klingons
The Andorians
The Borg Collective

After multiple rounds — including space-themed LP album covers, astronomical knowledge, and a paper based round of astro celebrity images that proved some stars age better than others — it became increasingly clear that the Klingons were on a despicable, bloodthirsty mission. A significant score (best not questioned too closely) propelled them well into the lead.
Festive snacks flowed freely, fuelling brains and banter alike, while the annual Christmas Jumper Competition was convincingly won by ‘comet maker’, Debra, whose ROG creation dazzled judges and competitors alike without causing a mass extinction event.

Victory was ultimately declared: the Klingon Team triumphed (a resounding Qapla’! echoed through the hall), and the traditional annual prize of Goats’ Cheese was duly awarded. Sadly, the actual trophy was nowhere to be found, having apparently been “beamed up” by Scotty, allegedly on the orders of the Vulcans. A Star Fleet inquiry may follow. Or not…
Post-quiz celebrations involved the liberal quaffing of Klingon Blood Wine (or something suspiciously similar), cementing the evening as both educational and mildly hazardous.

For those unable to attend in person, Eric’n’Ern and Mike thoughtfully recorded a special version of the quiz, allowing members to play — or replay — the fun at home, free from time pressure, judgement, or missing trophies.
All in all, the evening was a resounding success: festive, funny, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Same time next year — assuming the trophy rematerialises.

Live long, and prosper, set phasers to stun, and pass the cheese.'

Society BBQ – 28th June 2025

With the support of the committee and permission of the Parish Council, a team was set up consisting of members Jo Southgate, Steve Floodgate, John Archer, Mike Rushton, James Savage and Keith Rickard to plan and arrange the Society BBQ for 2025.

On the 28th June 2025 CMHASD held it's annual BBQ and what a superb BBQ it was too - glorious weather, expertly cooked food, games galore and fantastic company all made for a great event.

The team set up from 11:45, with assembly of two gazebos (one for food/drink and the other for games), and outdoor games. Steve, Jo and John set up their respective barbecues and very soon all was ready!

After a fantastic lunch… it was time for games! Kicking off with a round of croquet, then an old school party game ‘Pass the parcel’, but with forfeits as well as prizes. It was a ‘mashup’ of charades, pass-the-parcel, film/tv/book quiz and (reverse) tag! and was enjoyed by all who played.

After tea and cakes… It was time for, pin the tail on the dinosaur! Contestants had to be blindfolded and spun around and disoriented!  It was great fun and a lot of laughs were had watching members try and pin the tail on the dinosaur.

[ngg src="galleries" ids="91" display="basic_slideshow"]THANK YOU! To all the wonderful members who worked so hard to give us an amazingly enjoyable day!!! A HUGE round of applause and slaps on backs all-round! AND, thank you to all those who attended and made the BBQ so much fun… Let’s all hope there is another BBQ in 2026?

BAA Winchester Weekend – 11th to 13th April 2025

                        The CMHASD crew 2025

Member Diane Clarke wrote ''Over the weekend of 11 – 13 April 2025 several members of the CMHASD attended the BAA Winchester weekend at Sparsholt College. The event was well attended with approximately 120 members of the BAA.  The weekend started with a talk about the BepiColumbo mission from Professor David Rothery and ended with a presentation of “The Winchester Report” by Crayford’s very own 'Men in Brown Coats'.

The Alfred Curtis memorial lecture “We are made of star stuff” was given by Professor Dame Joycelyn Bell Burnell. The Professor’s presentation included same exam answers from American students such as – “H20 is hot water” & “CO2 is cold water” as well as – “Water is composed of two gins Oxygin & Hydrogin” Oxygin is pure gin, “Hydrogin is water & gin”

After the lecture She took some questions, and is seen here answering a two-part question from member John Archer, the first part of John’s question - “How does one address Dame Jocelyn” to which the reply was “Jocelyn”.

Before Joycelin gave the lecture the BAA president Ms Janice McClean read from the late Storm Dunlop’s appreciation of the life of Alfred Curtis 1901 -1976 to give the attendees an illustration of who he was.

Alfred “Alf” Curtis lived in Winchester, he was a fellow of the RAS and started the BAA “Winchester Weekend” which was originally held at King Alfreds College now known as The University of Winchester.  The first weekend taking place in 1967 with 56 attendees.  The weekends proved so popular that by 1976 the number had risen to 242, so the BAA relocated from King Alfreds to Sparsholt Collage in 2007.

There were also presentations from:

Professor Tony Freeth talking about the Antikythera Device.

Prof Mike Edwards delivered a lecture on the chemical makeup of other worlds.

Prof Boris Gänicke spoke about how Worlds will end including the end of the Earth when the Sun swells to become a red giant.

There was also a talk about the current range of “Smart Telescopes” given by Mr Steve Knight.

Professor Lucie Green gave a presentation about observing solar eclipses from space with the ESA PROBA 3 pair of satellite’s that were launched on the 05.12.24 and is currently going through various test phases before first light is received.

During the members session on Sunday afternoon, there were several contributions including:

Mark Radice’s presentation about stargazing in Namibia.

Nicky Fleet asking when is a Shower “not a Shower” related as to how the popular press promote meteor events such as the Perseid’s

“The Winchester Report” given by CMHASD members David Grist, Steve Floodgate & Gary Hunt.

All in all, a very varied and packed Winchester weekend.''

CMHASD Society Meal – 15th Feb 2025

On Saturday 15th Feb 2025 CMHASD held their annual Society Meal.  A large contingent of members ventured to the Chequers in the drizzle, to be met with a warm welcome and a splendid evening of food, drink and merriment. Credit to the Chequers team front of house and in the kitchen for their efforts as everything went off very well indeed :-) and a big Thank you to Malcolm Gough and John Archer for organising the event.

Below are a few photos taken of the super evening.

CMHASD Christmas Quiz – 2024

CMHASD members David Grist and Steve Floodgate pulled out all the stops to provide a night of head scratching, puzzlement and fun.  Thank you Dave & Steve for all your hard work & effort creating the quiz.  It was a great night and we are all looking forward to the next one!

Chairman John Archer wrote ''The Christmas Quiz was a great success – the men in brown coats did a splendid job and there was a very wide range of astronomy-related questions to contend with. Thank you Steve and Dave for the time you put into it, and to those who recorded the questions for those who couldn’t join us on the night.''

Congratulations to Neil Webster for winning the best Christmas jumper :-)

Congratulations to the winning team 'Positive Thinking' :-)

CMHASD BBQ – 31st August 2024

On Saturday 31st August 2024 CMHASD held a BBQ for its members.  Below are a selection of photos & videos of the BBQ shared by members and an account of the event written by member Gary Hunt.

''In the closing days of the summer of 2024, and after a three-year interregnum, CMHASD were determined to reinstate the annual summer BBQ. After judicious planning and a little dash of hope, it was decided to hold the event in the afternoon/evening of Saturday 31st August.

The suggestion was well received by the membership and with the support of the committee and permission of the Parish Council, a small planning group was set up of Sonia Rubie, Steve Floodgate, John Archer, Mike Rushton, Diane Clarke, and Jo Southgate. Preparation was in good hands, and I can confirm that joyous industry was carried-out by our hardworking heroes!

Sadly the weather forecast from earlier in the week was less than accurate, and we had our BBQ under cloud and just the odd spot of rain. However, CMHASD members are a hardy lot, and this wasn’t going to spoil our fun… no siree!

The team set up from 11:30, after accessing the Pavilion, with assembly of two gazebos (one for food/drink and the other for games), and outdoor games. Steve (F), Jo and John (A) set up their respective barbecues and very soon all was ready!

Most people arrived after 14:00, and the feast was easily a repast for the whole BAA, not just CMHASD, indeed, there was so much food left, it was saved and used on the following Thursday for another successful astronomical quiz created by the redoubtable MC…Sonia!

It is worth noting that several members of the public approached and engaged members, to see why we were having so much fun… I would suggest that at least a few visitors went away with some thought of checking us out?

After a fantastic lunch… it was time for games! Kicking off with several rounds of croquet, there was savage competition amongst members, whatever you think of how members played, it wasn’t cricket😆!

There was also a target sheet put up and compressed air rockets were aimed at the targets… to be honest, most members preferred to play, how high can I stamp the rocket, resulting in some near misses with other members!

One of the more popular games was introduced by Steve Goldson, a Finnish skittle game called ‘Mölkky’ and is pronounced “milkay”… The competition amongst members was fierce, with many finding unique and ‘mystery ball’ ways of tossing the baton and getting the points!

Sonia, then started some old school party games, including ‘Pass the parcel’, but with forfeits as well as prizes. It was a ‘mashup’ (I am known for being hip… man!), of charades, pass-the-parcel, music quiz and (reverse) tag! Sonia had created a monster of a game that had two sessions, and was loved by all!

After ice cream donated by an anonymous, but rather charming and good-looking member, and some lovely fruit-salad and cakes… It was time for, pin the alien on the spaceship! This was real fun, with, I would add some jeopardy, as contestants had to be blindfolded and spun around (to music!) and disoriented… Again this was real kid style fun, that appealed to the most ‘senior’ (think OLD!), of members…

Sadly, the weather was being uncooperative, and members feeling distinctly ‘chilled’ (in both senses!), cleared up and made our way to our respective homes (…maybe?🤣) just as it was dusk…

I think I am safe to say, the day was enjoyed by ALL! I believe I am speaking on behalf of all those present, THANK YOU! To all the wonderful members who worked so hard and creatively to give us an amazingly enjoyable day!!! A HUGE round of applause and slaps on backs all-round! AND, thank you to all those who attended and made the BBQ so much fun… Let’s all hope there is another BBQ in 2025?''

The Society would like to thank those members who shared their photos & videos and to Gary for his written account.  Thank you.
